So my brother in law is apparently miffed at me because I only enjoyed three of the Magnetic Fields’ 69 Love Songs. (Let me clear—I meant three of the 23 on Vol. 2.) He even blogged about it, proclaiming that he will detail what he loves about each of the 69 (69, dude!) songs over the course of the next two months (and change).
Perhaps my bro’s marital status (to my older and not-so-much-larger sister) has something to do with his faithfulness to this one (two-volume) record. Perhaps it has something to with that not-so-foolish consistency. I mean, I imagine that the soundtrack of married life comprises something like “Happy Together” played on loop, while single life is more like a brutal alteration of terrible tunes like “Walking on Sunshine” and “She (Fucking) Hates Me.”
Anyway, in counter to your condemnation of my condemnation of the rest of those love songs, brother in law, I give you my own (much more varied and fickle) 69. They won’t all be good, and I will probably run out of ideas by day 11 or so, but I have to do something to battle against 69 days of flat-out whimsy.
First up, a very Magnetic Fields-esque tune, “Don’t Fuck With Love” (The Sad Little Stars).
